Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced the removal of the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy) and the 10% betting tax.
This decision was made due to the failure of the taxes to meet revenue expectations but rather a contribution to the cost-of-living crisis in Ghana.
While presenting the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament on March 11, 2025, Dr. Forson emphasised that scrapping these levies, which were originally introduced by the previous administration, is a crucial step toward easing financial pressure on Ghanaians.
He believes there are alternatives to support economic recovery.
This move is also in response to widespread calls from football fans and bettors, who argue that the betting tax significantly reduced their winnings.
The tax, in particular, had frustrated many young people, who viewed it as an obstacle in a challenging job market with limited formal employment opportunities.
Dr. Forson also assured Parliament that the government would focus on improving revenue collection efficiency rather than introducing new taxes.
He stated that this approach would ensure adequate funding for development projects without adding financial strain on citizens.
