10,000 NSS personnel set for military training this August – NSA
The National Service Authority (NSA) will roll out a pilot military training programme for at least 10,000 National Service Personnel starting August 3, 2025, with plans to make the initiative mandatory for all service personnel beginning next year.
Speaking in an interview, Acting Director-General of the NSA, Felix Gyamfi, said the programme is designed to instill discipline, patriotism, and national readiness among Ghana’s youth. He emphasised that beyond emergency and disaster preparedness, the training will empower young people to tackle pressing societal issues such as illegal mining, environmental degradation, poor sanitation, and public health challenges.
“We must confront the cancer of galamsey, reclaim our environment, and deal decisively with issues like sanitation and malaria. Education alone won’t solve these problems—we need discipline, structure, and a readiness to act. This training will ensure young people show up early, show up prepared, and show up with purpose,” Mr. Gyamfi said.
The six-week training will be conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and will take place at military barracks across the country.
While participation in this year’s pilot phase will be voluntary, the NSA anticipates high interest and will select participants from diverse service sectors including health, agriculture, and community policing.
According to Mr. Gyamfi, the training will become a compulsory part of national service from 2026, potentially integrated into the service calendar. “If not all personnel take part this year, it will be required of everyone next year,” he affirmed.
