2025 CHAN was for player assessment not to win the title- Avram Grant on Zambia’s winless campaign

Zambia National Men’s Football Team head coach Avram Grant has indicated that his team’s run in this year’s CHAN was to assess players and not necessarily to win the title. Ghana’s Black Galaxies failed to qualify to compete in the tournament.

The former head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars said this in an interview after Zambia’s elimination from the competition, as mentioned earlier, was confirmed. The CHAN is a tournament where only African players who compete in their national league competitions are eligible to compete.

Zambia exited the tournament at the group stage without picking a win in four games; the South African nation lost all four games in the process.

Avram Grant’s side lost 1-0 to Benni McCarthy’s Kenya, 3-1 to Morocco, 2-1 to Angola, and 2-0 to the Democratic Republic of Congo, but Grant believes that assessing players was the team’s main goal all along.

“We had a target when we came here. We didn’t win, we didn’t even take a point but I think what we wanted from this is to see who is good for the [main] national team and who is not and now we know better” he said.

Zambia will compete in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco in December and are in Group A with Morocco, Comoros and Mali. Like the CHAN, Ghana failed to qualify for the tournament.
