The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched a significant reshuffling of Police Commanders stationed in areas known for illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
This initiative aligns with his commitment and that of the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntakato, to actively combat illegal mining operations and represents the first step in a wider strategy aimed at revitalising the current crackdown.
The reshuffle impacts several Divisional and District Commanders, particularly in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North police regions.
Authorities indicate that further command changes are anticipated in the upcoming weeks, as part of a comprehensive effort to enhance enforcement in regions severely impacted by galamsey activities.
This strategic move also addresses the intricate challenges posed by illegal mining, including environmental harm and threats to vital water resources.
In a related effort, the Police Service achieved a notable success following a four-day intelligence-led anti-galamsey operation.
Conducted from April 17, 2025, within the Samreboi area of the Western Region, the operation resulted in the arrest of 47 individuals involved in illegal mining.

These arrests occurred along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests—locations notorious for rampant galamsey activities.
The arrested suspects comprise 39 Ghanaian nationals and 8 Chinese nationals, including four women. The police have also confiscated a significant amount of equipment and vehicles associated with these illegal operations.
Items seized include 17 excavators, one bulldozer, four motorbikes, two Toyota Hilux vehicles, one RAV4 vehicle, four pump-action guns, one single-barrel gun, 54 live BB cartridges, and eight pumping machines.
These items are expected to be used as evidence as the suspects go through the prosecution process.
All individuals taken into custody are currently with the police and will be processed through the judicial system.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its dedication to enforcing the law and safeguarding the nation’s natural resources from illegal exploitation.
The IGP has also urged the public to collaborate and support the national endeavour to eliminate galamsey and protect the environment for future generations.
