The Ghana Police Service has arrested four individuals in connection with the kidnapping of three Chinese nationals aboard a Ghanaian vessel at Tema Port.
The abduction took place in April, when the crew members were taken during a suspected pirate attack on the fishing vessel Mengxin 1 in Ghanaian territorial waters.
The three missing crew members, the captain, chief mate, and chief engineer, were unaccounted for after the attackers had left the vessel.
Reports indicate that at around 5:53 p.m., seven armed men boarded the ship, firing warning shots and forcing several crew members into a secure compartment.
The attackers spent nearly three hours on board, gathering the crew on deck, seizing their mobile phones, and then leaving with the abducted Chinese nationals.
According to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the kidnappers transported the crew members to a remote location in Nigeria, where they were eventually abandoned.
DCOP Lydia Ayaako Donkor, the Director-General of CID, addressed the media on May 6, 2025, confirming the arrests.
She stated that the police had been working closely with local and international agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims.
“The coordinated efforts between Ghanaian and Nigerian security forces have led to the arrest of four individuals believed to be directly involved in this abduction,” Donkor said.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities in both countries continuing to search for additional suspects and uncovering the broader network behind the kidnapping.
