68-year old woman gives birth to twins

A miracle—that is the description that fits a 68-year-old Nigerian woman’s feat as she beats the biological clock to deliver a set of twins.

She was delivered at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, following an IVF conception, reports Nigeria’s Premium Times.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, Chairman, LUTH Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), said the woman was pregnant for the first time.

Prof Adeyemo said that she was delivered on April 14 through an elective Caesarean section, at 37 weeks’ gestation, reports

He said that the IVF and embryo transfer were done at a facility outside LUTH.

Adeyemo further said that the woman was, thereafter, referred to LUTH at early gestation and was subsequently managed till she was delivered.

“This is the first in LUTH, Nigeria, and Africa,” he said.

Adeyemo added that both the mother and the babies were in good conditions.

But this is not the first time in Nigeria a 60 plus woman took seed and gave birth. In October 28, a 67-year old woman, Mrs Ajibola Otubusin conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer procedure.

India

In September 2019, CNN reported that a 73-year-old woman in India gave birth to twin girls.

Erramatti Mangayamma, a farmer from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, was believed to be the oldest person ever to give birth. She became pregnant through IVF and doctors delivered the babies via caesarian section.

Mangayamma and her husband, 80-year-old E. Raja Rao, have been married since 1962 but had never been able to conceive naturally. They approached Umashankar in 2018 and, after preliminary tests were promising, the doctor agreed to give them one round of IVF treatment.

China

in October 2018, a 67-year-old retired Chinese doctor gave birth potentially making her the country’s oldest new mother.

The woman, surnamed Tian, gave birth to a girl at Zaozhuang Maternity and Child Health Hospital, where she had worked as a doctor before retiring, in the country’s northeastern Shandong province.

A hospital spokeswoman told CNN that Tian fell pregnant naturally after using her medical knowledge to self-administer traditional Chinese fertility treatments.

The baby was delivered via a cesarean section.

United Kingdom
