He has ruled the country since 1979, when he overthrew his uncle, former President Francisco Macías Nguema.
His son, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue is his Vice President.
76.8% of Equatorial Guinea’s population lives in poverty despite the country being oil rich, and having a low population of 1.5 million people.
The country has been ruled by two Presidents since independence – President Obiang since 1979 and his uncle, former President Francisco Nguema from 1968-1979.
