Teachers, Students Flee Lukula Community Following Renewed Clashes

Source The Ghana Report

Academic activities have been halted as teachers and students flee the Lukula community following a renewed clash between members of the Gonja and Mamprusi tribes in the North Gonja District in the Savannah Region.

The violence erupted after a man was shot and killed in the area.

The disturbance began on Thursday morning after days of tension in the community over the pending arrival of a rival from Daboya in the Wasipe Traditional Area.

According to the Public Relations Officer  (PRO) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Mamprugu-Moagduri District, Gariba Ridwan, some teachers and students have fled Lukula to neighbouring towns for refuge.

“We are in Yaba township, the GES office, that’s the district capital. We have schools in the Kikayiri community. Most of the teachers there, we are harbouring them in our quarters, and the students too don’t attend school because of the situation. Some of them are in our quarters; others are staying with their colleagues in Yaba township. You know how it is when there is a fight somewhere people run for their lives, when the incident happened, they had to run to save their lives. Academic work has come to a standstill. The insecurity is high,” he said on Starr News.

Meanwhile, the police have so far arrested over 100 youths of Daboya for attacking the Daboya police station where suspects in the conflict were kept. The suspects have been sent to Tamale for screening and processing for court.
