Gov’t hopeful US visa sanctions on Ghana will be lifted soon

Ghana’s mission in the United States has expressed optimism that the US government will soon lift the visa sanctions it imposed on some Ghanaian travelers.

Early this year, the US government imposed visa restrictions on Ghana for refusing to accept the deportation of some 7,000 Ghanaians.

The sanctions included limiting the awarding of visas to certain applicants, such as the domestic staff of diplomats posted to America, warning that the sanctions could be expanded to include other categories if the issue was not resolved.

The US accused the 7,000 deportees of being guilty of immigration offences, including abusing the terms of their visas.

But Ghana’s envoy to the US, Ambassador Baffour Adjei-Bawuah says the Mission has now established a robust mechanism to deal with illegal migration hence its expectation.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the Ambassador said the new system developed by Ghana is one the US is likely to recommend to other nations.

“We at the embassy have knowledge to develop the kind of approach which should make it possible for the US to lift the sanction that they [have] put on us and I do believe that the US will recognize this and do what is right and proper” he said
