Road tolls to return with digital system – Roads Ministry
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced the reintroduction of road and bridge tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance and other related initiatives.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Ministry is assembling a modern, technologically-driven toll collection system.
To achieve this, the Ministry said it will employ an open, transparent, competitive, cost-effective and fair procurement process.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public of commitment to introducing a modernised system that addresses the current tolling and road maintenance funding challenges of the country,” the statement read.
This announcement comes after the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, disclosed during his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament that the new government will introduce road tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance.
Dr Forson further argued that road toll collection is a globally accepted practice and a vital source of funding for road maintenance.
It will be recalled that the government scrapped all tolls on public roads in the 2022 Budget and Economic Policy presented to parliament on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
The booths have since been non-functional.
