The Board of the National Cathedral of Ghana has reaffirmed its dedication to the completion of the Cathedral project, describing it as a vital national asset despite recent political developments and ongoing investigations.
In a press release signed by Executive Director Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah, the Board responded to a press conference held on 18 July by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
At the event, the Minister announced that President John Mahama had instructed the Secretariat be dissolved and legal steps taken to dismantle the Board.
In its response, the Board said it was currently reviewing the full content of the press conference and promised to respond in due course.
They raised concerns about the Minister’s statements, particularly the focus on a management letter rather than the full audit reports from 2020 to 2023.
“The press conference presented an incomplete picture, highlighting selective issues while ignoring our detailed responses which were already available to the Minister,” the statement read.
The Board voiced disappointment over the President’s directive to dissolve them, especially as state bodies like the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the National Intelligence Bureau are still conducting investigations.
They described the decision as premature and expressed concern that it undermines ongoing engagements with the government.
“As a Board, we remain committed to the vision of a National Cathedral for Ghana,” Dr Opoku-Mensah said.
According to the Board, the Cathedral represents more than a religious monument, it symbolises national unity and cultural identity.
