Findings on Opioid abuse across tertiary institutions ‘alarming’ – Opare Addo

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has hinted at troubling findings from research commissioned by the Ministry on opioid and substance abuse among the youth in Ghana.

Speaking at the launch of the Youth Sounding Board, a joint initiative of the European Union and the Government of the Netherlands, the Minister disclosed that the study uncovered worrying trends of drug use across tertiary institutions in the country.

Mr. Opare Addo intimated that the findings will be made public after the President has been fully briefed.

“We have commissioned research on opioids and the substance abuse crisis, which is undermining productivity and social stability, and our findings are ready, and they are very alarming. We sampled almost all our tertiary institutions, and based on what I have found, I need to brief the President first before making it public,” he said.

He further assured members of the Youth Sounding Board of the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with them to address challenges affecting the country’s youth.
