NUGS demands release of withheld 2024 WASSCE Results

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has given the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) a one-week deadline to release all withheld 2024 WASSCE results or face nationwide protests.

The union is also calling for the removal of WAEC Ghana’s Head, citing unfair treatment of candidates accused of examination malpractice.

NUGS raised concerns about WAEC’s failure to provide affected students with a fair hearing before withholding or cancelling results.

The union also accused WAEC of intentionally delaying results until after university admission deadlines, preventing students from securing placements in public universities.

Furthermore, NUGS criticized WAEC’s practice of cancelling entire results for students found guilty of malpractice in one subject, advocating that only the affected paper should be nullified.

The union also noted the absence of a proper appeal process for students to challenge WAEC’s decisions.

In a letter dated January 2, 2025, NUGS formally addressed these issues, but WAEC has yet to respond positively.

NUGS President Daniel Korley warned of large-scale protests if their demands are not met, calling for urgent reforms to ensure justice, transparency, and accountability within WAEC.

Korley emphasized that education is a fundamental right, and WAEC must maintain its credibility to preserve public confidence.

He also urged students to remain calm but firm in demanding their rights, with NUGS standing in solidarity with affected students until justice is achieved.
