Health officials have confirmed two new cases of Mpox in the Accra metropolitan area, raising fresh concerns about the viral disease in Ghana.

According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the cases were detected at a health facility and are currently under close observation. Though unrelated, both cases have prompted immediate action, including contact tracing to contain further transmission.

The Director-General of the GHS has instructed all Regional Health Directors to reactivate public health emergency operation centres. They are also expected to enhance surveillance, communication efforts, and case management across the country.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a contagious viral disease with symptoms such as fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. Transmission typically occurs through direct contact with an infected person’s skin, body fluids, or mucosal surfaces.

“Our teams are actively monitoring the cases and tracing contacts,” a health official familiar with the situation told 3News. “Early detection and response are key to preventing widespread transmission.”

Ghana’s first Mpox cases were recorded in June 2022. By the end of last year, 34 confirmed cases had been reported nationwide. The latest cases are the first to be confirmed this year.

Across Africa, the Mpox outbreak continues to be a public health concern. As of March 2025, over 24,200 cases and 260 deaths had been reported across 22 countries.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the hardest hit.

Health authorities in Ghana are urging the public to report symptoms early and avoid direct contact with suspected cases.
