A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw fears ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo may be charge for contempt of court if he should continue with his urge sympathy in the court of public opinion.

ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo was on Monday arrested in connection to a group suspected to be plotting a coup d’état aimed at destabilizing the country

The police officer has since been in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigation and was arraigned before court on Tuesday.

In his interaction with the media on Tuesday, ACP Agordzo said he was not going to be gagged.

“I have not committed any crime; I have done nothing wrong. The President called on us to be citizens so when I express my opinion on a WhatsApp platform unrelated to any alleged coup, nobody should bog me down.” He said.

Speaking on the issue in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw said, the attitude of the police officer and his utterances is likely to land him a contempt charge.

His said, the police officer’s claim that he is only being a good citizen by expressing his views as requested by the president neither here nor there and may land him a contempt charge.

“ Yes your are a citizen but as a police officer, you are guided by principles, therefore you must be circumspect with the things you say, as a security officer you may be prevail to certain security intelligence an ordinary citizen may be not be and therefore, you have to be careful when you engage in certain discourse”

“ Your freedom of speech rights is somewhat curtailed as a police officer because you enjoy certain rights the ordinary citizen does not, it is just like the military…do you think the military officers do not have issues they will like to talk about but they cannot because of their principles, you can do that in your private conversations but not on a group platform ,so  we have to be careful in what you say……his assertions that the Arab Spring may happen in Ghana can be interpreted that he is in support of a coup happening in Ghana” He said

ACP Agordzo is expected to appear before the Kaneshie District court today November 8.
