The Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor has revealed that the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, instructed members of his side to disrupt the vetting of the Health Minister-designate, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

During an interview on Monday, February 3, 2025, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament said Mr Afenyo-Markin specifically directed the MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, to violently disrupt the vetting process.

He said the Minority Leader followed his instruction with insults which triggered the MP to act in such a manner.

Mr Ahiafor added that the Minority had premeditated the chaotic events that ensued in Parliament on January 30.

“Afenyo-Markin even rained insults on Jerry Ahmed. He called Jerry Shaib silly and told him he wasn’t doing what he brought him to the vetting to do. Even Jerry Ahmed going to prevent Akandoh from taking the seat was on the instruction of Afenyo-Markin. I heard him loud and clear,” he said.

This comes after Speaker Alban Bagbin suspended four MPs following a violent confrontation between Majority and Minority MPs during the vetting of the Health Minister-designate.

The suspended legislators are Rockson Dafeamekpor, Hassan Tampuli, Frank Annor Dompreh, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

The chaos erupted when the Minority MPs on the Appointments Committee asked to postpone the vetting of some nominees to the next day, January 31.

The Majority, however, disagreed and insisted the process continued.

This disagreement escalated into a physical altercation between the legislators with some Minority members disrupting the session by breaking tables and microphones.

The legislators on the Majority side still stood their ground and insisted the vetting must continue, prompting the intervention of the police officers present.
