Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, has officially presented himself to the Ghana Police Service to assist in an ongoing investigation into an alleged confrontation with a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” protest on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The Minority Leader reported to the police to assist in the investigation on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

This was revealed by the police in a statement dated May 7, 2025.

This comes after the Ghana Police Service requested the Speaker of Parliament to release the Minority Leader for interrogation in an alleged assault case involving an officer.

“Following a request to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Hon. Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police today, 7th May, 2025, to assist the investigations.

“Investigation has also commenced into a petition received from Hon. Afenyo-Markin alleging he was assaulted by the Police officer concerned,” the statement said.

In an earlier statement, the Police Service said it had reviewed several video recordings from the demonstration before calling on the MP for interrogation.

Despite the police failing to reveal the identity of the officer, Afenyo-Markin, in a petition to the IGP, identified him as Constable Forson, “a tall, fair, and heavily built officer” assigned to provide security at the entrance of Parliament House during the protest.

According to the Minority Leader, Constable Forson physically assaulted him at the parliamentary entrance, an incident he believes warrants immediate disciplinary action.

In his petition, Afenyo-Markin wrote, “Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration”.

To counter what he describes as “misleading narratives circulating in the public domain,” the legislator also issued a public statement, outlining his version of the events.
