Africa will benefit from biennial World Cup – CAF President

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has backed calls for the FIFA World Cup to be staged every two years.

Motsepe who arrived in Accra on Wednesday for a two-day visit to the country, believes the proposition for the global showpiece will be financially beneficial to the African continent.

“Side by side with the Super League is to have a World Cup every two years. African football must be put in a fundamental position to benefit financially,” the CAF president said during a session with the Sports Media in Ghana on Thursday, October 21.

“I am very clear in my mind that one of the biggest beneficiaries of football every two years is the developing world.” He disclosed.

In recent times, there have been discussions and proposals for the global tournament to be held biennially with former Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger leading the charge.

Wenger, who is now FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, has been promoting the idea of a biennial World Cup as part of the organization’s review of the international match calendar and has repeated his support for the change from the established four-year cycle.

However, many have opposed the move including UEFA, who feel the football calendar is packed and hosting the World Cup every two years will only put pressure on the footballers and also take away the beauty of the competition.
