Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo has called for urgent efforts to improve Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy within Ghana’s judiciary, stressing the need to keep pace with global technological advancements and ensure responsible use of emerging tools.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Justice Ackaah-Boafo said, “I strongly recommend that the judiciary of Ghana prioritise AI literacy.

This is the direction the world is heading, and we must not be left behind.”

He warned that while AI holds significant potential, its misuse, especially without a proper understanding of how it works, could be dangerous.

“If we are literate in how AI operates, we’ll be better positioned to identify the risks and address them proactively,” he said.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo also pointed to global examples, noting that countries like Canada and the UK have already developed AI guidelines for judges.

He recommended that Ghana take similar steps to ensure ethical and informed use of AI in the legal process.

“With clear guidelines, judges will be better equipped to detect issues such as AI-generated misinformation in legal documents and ensure accountability in court proceedings,” he explained.
