Akufo-Addo nominates Charles Adu-Boahen as Minister of State at Finance Ministry

President Akufo-Addo has nominated Charles Adu-Boahen as a Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, pending parliamentary approval.

The investment banker had served as a Deputy Minister at the Finance Ministry from 2017 to 2021 under the first Akufo-Addo administration.

In the absence of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, he was appointed as President Akufo-Addo’s representative at the Ministry of Finance in February 2021.

The son of the NPP flagbearer in the 1992 presidential elections was in charge of a number of programmes.

He was vocal in defense of the $1billion Agyapa royalties deal and the main government official explaining the 2021 budget as Mr. Ofori-Atta sought medical attention for post-COVID complications in the US.

Who is Charles Adu-Boahen?

Mr. Charles Adu Boahen has decades of experience in Corporate Finance, Investment Banking, Asset Management, Private Equity, and Real Estate.

He had previous stints at Wall Street with years of experience in Finance.

Prior to his appointment as a Deputy Minister for Finance in 2017, Mr. Adu-Boahen was the CEO of Black Star Advisors (BSA), a boutique investment bank and asset management firm, and Primrose Properties Ghana (PPG), a real estate development company, both of which he founded in 2007.

Mr. Adu-Boahen was a Director and Regional Head of Corporate & Investment Banking for Standard Bank of South Africa.

Prior to Standard Bank, Hon Adu-Boahen was with JP Morgan for over five years as Vice President and Head of Investment Banking for Sub-Saharan Africa where he was responsible for developing the Investment banking business across sub-Saharan Africa excluding South Africa, he was also the JPM Senior Country Representative for Nigeria.

After Business School, Mr. Adu-Boahen joined the $400mm AIG African Infrastructure Fund as an Investment Officer. After college, he joined Solomon Smith Barney, now part of Citigroup, on Wall Street in their Investment Banking Division where his responsibilities included various corporate finance and mergers & acquisitions assignments, primarily in the Chemicals and Energy sector.

He had his BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California.

He also had his MBA from Harvard Business School.

He is an old student of Achimota School.
