Akwatia by-election set for September 2

The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a by-election for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

In a statement released on July 30, the EC confirmed that the parliamentary seat has officially become vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution, which calls for a by-election when a seat becomes vacant.

Prospective candidates can begin preparing their nomination documents, which will be available for download on the EC’s website from July 30 to August 13.

Nomination forms must be submitted in person or through a proposer or seconder between August 11 and 13 at the Denkyembour District Office. Submissions will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

To be eligible, candidates need to have their forms signed by a proposer and seconder, along with support from 18 additional registered voters in the constituency. They must also provide two recent passport-sized photos taken against a red background.

Filing fees are set at GH¢10,000 for most candidates. However, women and persons with disabilities will benefit from a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.

“We encourage all interested and eligible citizens to participate in the democratic process. This is an opportunity for the people of Akwatia to choose a new representative in Parliament,” said an EC official.
