The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), led by Chief Executive Michael Kpapko Allotey, has initiated an “Operation Red Line,” a new strategy designed to enhance pedestrian safety and regulate street trading in the Central Business District.

This initiative is part of the AMA’s larger effort to reduce congestion, featuring distinct red lines marked on pavements and walkways to clearly define areas for pedestrian use and organised trading activities.

The operation is being implemented alongside ongoing enforcement measures, which include the removal of unauthorised structures, mobile vendors, and any encroachments that impede public pathways and roadways.

On Wednesday, May 21, the AMA task force pressed on with its decongestion efforts at the busy Circle Neoplan Station, marking Day 2 of its citywide campaign to alleviate congestion in the capital.

Day 1 of the operation targeted known hotspots such as Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka, areas frequently overwhelmed by street vending and traffic bottlenecks.

Meanwhile, the Mayor has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring order in the Central Business District (CBD), emphasising that the ongoing decongestion operation is not a temporary measure.
