The Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA) has threatened to withdraw anaesthesia services for all forms of surgery until further notice.

The industrial action is expected to start from January 31, 2020.

The group, in a letter signed by the National President, James Nwinsagra has expressed its misgivings about government failure to meet the union earlier demand.

Dated January 11, 2020,  the letter was copied to  Regional Ministers and to the President Akufo-Addo, appealing to the Medical and Dental Council not to change their name.

The union claims the Medical and Dental Council wants its name changed from ‘Certified Registered Anaesthetist (CRA) to Physician Assistant (PA).

The group claims the council “is using a backdoor approach by introducing a harmonised curriculum for training to change the already existing Bachelor of Science- Anaesthesia degree awarded to Certified Registered Anzesthetists after
successful completion of training to Bsc. Physician Assistant- Anaesthesia. ”

According to them, this is a clear violation of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act 857 (Act 2013).

The Association in April 2019 had threatened to embark on strike action over this same issue but subsequently called it following governments’ mediation.
