A dramatic standoff unfolded at the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly when Member of Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh was briefly held against his will during a heated confirmation process for the Municipal Chief Executive nominee, Philibert Fumey Selorm.
The incident occurred after the MP attempted to serve as a polling agent during the vote, drawing sharp resistance from National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Regional Organiser David Dakudzi and several police officers.
Witnesses say the atmosphere inside the assembly quickly grew tense as verbal clashes escalated into physical scuffles between supporters of the MP and those backing the nominee.
Ahead of the vote, there had been speculation that Annoh-Dompreh would try to prevent Selorm’s confirmation. The nominee had previously contested the MP during the 2024 parliamentary elections, a race that ended in a legal battle.
Despite the chaos, voting continued under police watch. Selorm secured his position with 29 votes out of 38 cast.
As the results were announced, anger erupted among some NDC supporters who accused the MP of interfering with the process. The crowd demanded he be handed over to them, with threats shouted from outside the assembly.
“The tension was unbearable,” said a witness who asked not to be named. “It felt like anything could happen at any moment.”
To prevent further unrest, officers formed a protective ring around Annoh-Dompreh and safely moved him to the municipal NADMO office.
Protesters followed closely behind but were held back by the security team.
