Ashanti REGSEC bans motorbikes after 7 PM over recent killings

Authorities in the Ashanti Region have announced a new nighttime motorbike ban in response to escalating tensions following the assassination of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase.

The directive was issued by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and takes effect immediately.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, July 25, 2025, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene said the decision came after an emergency REGSEC meeting held on July 23.

The move forms part of a broader effort to restore calm and prevent further violence in the region after the chief’s fatal shooting in Asawase earlier in the week.

Under the new restrictions, motorbikes are banned after 7:00 pm throughout the region. In addition, unlicensed motorbikes and those without proper lighting are no longer permitted on the roads.

Riders have also been instructed not to wear smocks, a type of traditional attire that officials say is being used to conceal weapons.

REGSEC has also suspended the ongoing intertribal football competition until further notice to help prevent any clashes that may arise from growing inter-ethnic tensions.

Security forces, including police and military personnel, have been deployed to key areas to help maintain order.

“Our region is hurting, and people are scared. These measures are not meant to punish but to protect lives and restore stability,” Dr. Amoakohene said during the announcement.

He also expressed condolences to the family of the late chief and urged the public to support ongoing investigations.

Residents are being asked to cooperate fully with security personnel as efforts continue to secure peace across the region.
