Release Afenyo-Markin for interrogation in assault case – Police to Speaker
The Ghana Police Service has requested the Speaker of Parliament to release the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for interrogation in an alleged assault case involving an officer.
An official statement indicated that the Police Service has reviewed several video recordings from the demonstration, which captured an incident involving a police officer and the lawmaker.
The statement also assured that the police officer involved in the incident would cooperate fully with the investigation.
This comes after the Minority Leader petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate an assault on him by a police Constable during the “Save the Judiciary” protest on May 5, 2025.
Despite the police failing to reveal the identity of the officer, Afenyo-Markin, in his petition, identified him as Constable Forson, “a tall, fair, and heavily built officer” assigned to provide security at the entrance of Parliament House during the protest.
According to the Minority Leader, Constable Forson physically assaulted him at the parliamentary entrance, an incident he believes warrants immediate disciplinary action.
In his petition, Afenyo-Markin wrote, “Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration”.
To counter what he describes as “misleading narratives circulating in the public domain,” the legislator also issued a public statement, outlining his version of the events.
