Assembly Member killed as residents, military clash in Mpatuam

Two people, including an Assembly Member, have lost their lives following a violent confrontation between residents of Mpatuam and military personnel in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

The unrest, which unfolded over Monday and Tuesday, has heightened tensions within the community, though the precise trigger for the clashes remains uncertain.

Initial reports indicate that the violence began when military officers intervened as residents allegedly attempted to access one of the mining concessions owned by Asanko Gold.

The Assembly Member for the Mpatuam West Electoral Area, Sekyi Michael, confirmed that one person was killed during Monday’s altercation.

He further noted that the military returned the next day, leading to another confrontation with residents, which resulted in the death of another individual, who was also identified as an Assembly Member.

Meanwhile, authorities have yet to release any official information regarding the troubling incident.
