In a recent crackdown on drug activity, the Asutifi Police Command in the Ahafo Region arrested five young men suspected of smoking marijuana and dismantled four makeshift camps used for their gatherings.
The operation was led by the new Police Commander, Superintendent Opoku Yamoah, who assumed office just weeks ago.
This latest effort comes shortly after a similar exercise in Ahafo Kenyasi that resulted in the arrest of 16 commercial sex workers.
Superintendent Yamoah said the operation was carried out in Acherensua after multiple complaints from residents about rising crime in the district.
According to him, many of these offences were linked to drug users who often gather at local “wee bases.”
Intending to restore peace and order, the commander deployed 21 officers to raid the suspected drug spots. The team arrested five individuals and set fire to four of the illegal structures used by the group.
The suspects have been identified as Derrick Ntora, 18; Samuel Agbeko, 19; Sumaila Sulemana, 20; Adams Fuseini, 30; and Fataw Dokoli, 20.
Their occupations range from labourers to tricycle riders and illegal miners.
They were arraigned and granted bail on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. The court has scheduled their next appearance for August 26.
“We are simply responding to the community’s call for help. People want safety, and we are here to provide it,” said Supt. Yamoah.
His swift actions and efforts to speed up legal processes have drawn praise from local chiefs and residents, many of whom say they are beginning to feel safer in their communities.
