Ban all small-scale mining and arrest galamsey financiers – Jantuah tells gov’t

A private legal practitioner and leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr. Kwame Jantuah, is advocating for a ban on all forms of small-scale mining to address the chronic issue of illegal mining, which continues to impact Ghana’s ecological ecosystem negatively.

Mr. Jantuah also called on the government and relevant sector ministries mandated to safeguard the environment to arrest the financiers of galamsey operations and political figures involved in illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The legal practitioner made the call on TV3’s current affairs programme The Key Points on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

Commenting on the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine’s directive to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yamin, and Abanga Yakubu Alhassan over illegal mining, Mr. Jantuah said the problem cannot be solved until the financiers and political actors behind galamsey are brought to justice.

“Anybody involved in galamsey should be arrested and prosecuted irrespective of political colours. Let us tackle those who are financing it. Until we tackle them, we should forget about it. The politicians in it should be brought to book,” Mr. Jantuah reiterated.
