The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to mark the 60th anniversary of the Ghana Cedi on July 19, 2025.

In a statement issued on May 13, the central bank said the celebration will commemorate six decades since the Cedi was introduced as Ghana’s sole legal tender, replacing the Ghanaian Pound on July 19, 1965.

“The Cedi has served as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s economic independence and development,” the statement noted, adding that the anniversary will reflect on the currency’s role in the country’s financial evolution and its enduring significance in national life.

“To adapt to the changing demands of the Ghanaian economy, the Cedi has evolved through several modifications in form and policy direction, over the last 60 years. Ghana’s tenacity, innovation and quest for economic stability are all embodied in the Cedi’s reforms, from the first note and coins to the safe currency we use today”, the statement said.

The BoG explained that in recognition of the important milestone, the central bank intends to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the issue of the cedi with a series of nationwide activities and engagements between July and December 2025, including official launch events, public exhibitions, educational campaigns and stakeholder forums.

It, therefore, extended an invitation to the general public the public, institutions, organisations, stakeholders and development partners to join the Bank in celebrating this important milestone.

“Further details of the programmes and activities will be announced in due course. The Bank of Ghana is committed to maintaining a stable Cedi in pursuit of stability in the general level of prices,” the statement concluded.
