Barcelona to appeal Robert Lewandowski suspension

Barcelona have confirmed they plan to appeal the three-game suspension handed out to Robert Lewandowski over a gesture he made after he was sent off against Osasuna.

Lewandowski was shown two yellow cards by referee Gil Manzano, which is normally punishable by a one-game ban, but he was investigated after being seen making a gesture as he left the pitch.

While some have sought to defend Lewandowski and offer an alternative explanation for his actions, the immediate sentiment was that the Poland striker was implying that there was something ‘fishy’ about the official.

Found guilty of questioning the integrity of the referee, Lewandowski has been handed a three-game ban which will see him miss upcoming games against Espanyol, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis, but Barcelona have confirmed their intention to appeal the ruling.

“FC Barcelona will put their case to the Appeals Committee in view of the three game ban handed out to Robert Lewandowski by the Disciplinary Committee,” a club statement read.

“The Polish striker received the suspension after being sent off for a second bookable offence in the 2-1 win over Osasuna in Pamplona in La Liga.”

Should Lewandowski’s ban be upheld, Barca boss Xavi faces a conundrum over who could replace his top scorer.

Memphis Depay has been out with a thigh problem but is expected to return for his club after the World Cup, while the versatile Ferran Torres is also an option.
