Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has publicly expressed strong support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia is the best presidential candidate to guide the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to successfully win the 2028 general election.

In an interview, Mr. Awuku commended the former Vice President’s leadership during challenging times, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic and various global economic disruptions.

“I believe Dr. Bawumia presents us with a very good opportunity to win 2028,” Awuku stated. “Some of us are of the unshaken belief that the difficulties we faced as a government over the last four years — the post-COVID era, economies around the world in turmoil, the global shocks and all — Dr. Bawumia did a good job”.

He emphasised Bawumia’s resilience, strong leadership, and integrity as compelling reasons for his steadfast endorsement.

“He stood in the gap for the NPP, and I believe in his personal achievement and records, his character, and the strength of his character, and the integrity that he also has,” Awuku added.

Awuku’s endorsement further amplifies the growing momentum behind Dr. Bawumia’s campaign to lead the NPP into the upcoming presidential election cycle.

He made these remarks after 60 MPs of the party also expressed their support for Dr. Bawumia’s ambition to re-contest in the January 2025 presidential primary.

Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong, being the leader of the group backing the former Vice President, said efforts are ongoing to engage other MPs who have not yet publicly expressed their support.

“The processes are about to commence to select our leadership in the party, and one of the key ones is the flagbearership, and that is where the focus is. Our MPs — the number being 88 — are the political front of the party when we are in opposition. So that responsibility has just come upon us, and we have to take the mantle and do what is right,” he said after paying a visit to Dr. Bawumia.

He emphasised that the MPs’ support for Dr. Bawumia is entirely voluntary, with each member making their own informed choice.

“…MPs on their volition have made their own decisions and decided to align with A, B, C, and in Parliament as at today, 60 of the 88 have indicated and declared that they want to side with their colleagues to champion the cause of Dr. Bawumia to win the flagbearership and to lead the party into the elections in 2028. So it is a voluntary thing, nobody was pressured”.
