Black Queens to play AFCON teams in friendlies before continental championship
Ghana’s National Women’s Football Team-the Black Queens’- preparation for the 2024 Women’s AFCON continues with the team scheduled to play another set of friendly games prior to the start of the competition.
The tournament was billed to take place last year but the start date got shifted due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Black Queens are set to play against Malawi on Saturday, June 21, Botswana on Wednesday, June 25 and Nigeria on Saturday, June 29.
The 2024 Women’s AFCON runs from July 5 to July 26 in Morocco where 12 nations will compete to win the continental championship.
Botswana and Nigeria have qualified to compete in this year’s Women’s AFCON with both nations drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia and Algeria
Ghana has been involved in friendly games in preparation for the tournament including matchups against Cote D’Ivoire and Senegal in recent times but those games have come with a heavy contingent from the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League in Ghana.
However, following the announcement of the Ghana squad for the tournament that had four Ghana-based players included in a set up that has a huge presence of foreign-based players.
The 2024 Women’s AFCON is the first tournament Ghana will compete in under recently appointed head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren.
