BoG sets October 28 to launch Cedi@60 anniversary celebration
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced October 28, 2025 as the new date to begin celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Ghana Cedi.
The event, initially scheduled for August, was postponed following the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region that claimed eight lives.
According to the central bank, the celebration will kick off with a national launch ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.
As part of the year-long activities, the BoG will organise a Cedi Van Regional Roadshow, currency exhibitions, public education campaigns, and outreach programmes to raise awareness on clean note handling, currency security features, and the evolution of Ghana’s money system since independence.
The Bank will also host a currency conference featuring participants from central banks worldwide, as well as representatives from academia and the private sector.
“The Cedi@60 anniversary presents a strategic opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, engage the public on the history and future of the currency, and promote pride in Ghana’s financial and cultural identity,” the BoG said.
“It is also an occasion to strengthen policy literacy, promote the Bank’s Clean Note Campaign, and inspire the next generation to appreciate and protect the integrity of the cedi.”
Background
Ghana officially adopted the Cedi as its national currency on July 19, 1965, marking a major step toward economic independence and the country’s transition from colonial rule.
Over the past six decades, the Cedi has undergone several reforms, redesigns, and policy transformations, serving not only as a monetary instrument but also as a symbol of Ghana’s resilience, self-determination, and progress.
