Fire consumes portions of Kejetia Market

A section of the Kejetia Market in the Ashanti Region has been engulfed by fire.

The cause of the outbreak is not immediately known, but scores of shops have been razed completely.

The fire started in the early hours of Wednesday, March 15, at the section known as Kejetia Dubai Gate 3.

The fire is reported to have begun at the section for car tyres and quickly spread to several shops.

The highly combustible materials are believed to have escalated the inferno.

At the time of filing this report, several tenders have been dispatched to the scene to douse the fire.

The firefighters had to use cranes to rescue traders trapped in some of the storey buildings.

It is reported that a mother and her baby fell unconscious after inhaling the toxic smoke from the inferno.

Several items worth thousands of cedis have been destroyed as some traders tried to salvage the little they could retrieve from the inferno.

Other emergency services also dispatched officials to the scene, with the Ambulance Service transporting about nine injured people to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses have indicated that a woman jumped from the second floor of the building in order to escape from the raging fire.
