Chelsea, Newcastle United remember Christian Atsu on second anniversary of passing
English Premier League sides Chelsea and Newcastle United have paid tribute to late Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu on the second anniversary of his passing.
The former Ghana international tragically died after a devastating earthquake in Turkey on February 6, 2023.
His body was trapped under rubbles for close to two weeks before he was recovered and brought to Ghana for his final burial.
In remembering the Ghanaian, Chelsea posted: “Two years ago today we tragically lost Christian Atsu. Our thoughts continue to remain with Christian’s family and friends.”
Atsu spent four years at Chelsea but failed to make an official appearance for the club before joining Newcastle United in 2017, where he became a cult hero.
“Two years ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances. Our thoughts are forever with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Christian,” wrote Newcastle United.
The Ghana Football Association also posted on their social media pages: “Remembering Christian Atsu. On this day 2 years ago, we lost Christian Atsu in the tragic Turkey earthquakes. His kindness, talent, and dedication to Ghana football will never be forgotten. Forever in our hearts.”
