Choose a leader who can solve problems, not divide us – Kufuor to NPP
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rise above identity politics as the party begins its search for a 2028 presidential candidate.
Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s new policy think tank, the Patriotic Institute, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025Mr Kufuor urged party members to focus on competence and the ability to solve real problems rather than on tribal, religious or gender affiliations.
His comments come just days after the NPP announced that it will hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026. The announcement has already triggered political jostling and some early attacks among hopefuls.
The former president reminded party supporters that democracy is about individuals, not group identities, and warned that letting such sentiments shape internal decisions could harm the party’s image.
“We are a democratic party and we uphold common humanity. In a democracy, we don’t go for tribe or religion or gender, but individual,” Mr Kufuor said.
He challenged party members to select a flagbearer who can appeal to the broader electorate and address pressing national issues with practical solutions.
Mr Kufuor also cautioned against rhetoric that could reinforce negative stereotypes about the NPP being tribal or exclusionary, especially when it comes from within.
“If that comes from our own mouths, then I tell you, we are the ones perpetuating it,” he warned.
He urged the party to remain united and forward-looking, saying the focus should be on solving problems, not creating new ones.
