Christmas revives VIP transport after coronavirus icy touch

After enduring months of economic decline, Ghana’s largest private transport operator, VIP, has seen a major revival – thanks to Christmas.

General Manager at VIP, Adakabre Frimpong-Manso, beamed when he told theghanareport.com that the Christmas festivities have seen the transport network surpass its average of 10,000 passengers per day.

He revealed that even with VIP’s high patronage, the numbers it was getting this Christmas was quite surprising.

Things were not like this in March and April when Ghanaians celebrated another major holiday, Easter.

It was an unusual Easter.

Coronavirus had struck the country and with the president’s famous quote, “the frontline is your front door”, many Ghanaians barricaded themselves in their homes to avoid contracting coronavirus.

At VIP, sales dried up almost quickly.

The lull continued for several months. He explained the first sign of revival came during the elections when suddenly, some 40% of its fleet of 700 buses were allocated to political parties and politicians to bus their votes across the country.

With the elections over, commercial activities have exploded.

When theghanareport.com visited the terminal in Accra, the General Manager explained that business was very brisk and that it has created a satellite station at Amasaman.
