Court stops all NDC protests in Accra until after inauguration

The Accra Regional Police command has secured a court injunction against the opposition National Democratic Congress from further protesting in Accra against the Electoral Commission.

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Ade Coker  had written to the police notifying them of their intension of stating series of demonstrations against the EC from December 20th – to January 10, 2021

But the police in return secured an injunction against the party.

“The request by the NDC can not obviously be met by the police in view of ongoing post-election and multifaceted security operations for the festive season and beyond”

“The Regional Police Command is hereby drawing the attention of the general public especially sympathizers, followers, and supporters of the NDC, to the restriction order and compliance” part of the statement read.

The NDC has challenged the results of some constituencies, winning the Sene West case in court against the governing New Patriotic Party.

The flagbearer of the party, John Mahama, has not conceded to defeat after he described the 2020 presidential results as a ‘stolen verdict’

“I want to state categorically and firmly that I have not congratulated any person,” Mr. Mahama said on the eve of the declaration on December 9.

The Techiman South seat is in contention, the  NDC has challenged the EC to produce the collated results which it claims it won.

Only a court can order a re-collation of the results. At the presidential level, the NDC could head to court to challenge the declaration of President Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner.

He won by more than 500,000 votes. But the NDC claims it has evidence of fraud.

Ghana last witnessed an election petition in 2012 when the NPP unsuccessfully challenged the declaration of John Mahama as the winner of that presidential election. Mahama won by 325,863 votes.

A real political leader is the person who believes and seeks redress in the Law of the land whether it is in his favour or not.
In just 8 years Mahama has forgotten that the Supreme Court that adjudicated on Nana Akufo Addo’s petition against the EC and the NDC over the 2012 Presidential election results.
By his behaviour and refusing to go to court. he has tarnished his image and that of the nation. Nana Akufo Addo may not be the best but at least he’s law abiding and peaceful.
