Dear Hard-Working Student, Your Grades Don’t Define You

Dear hard-working student,

Another semester is wrapping up for you. Your semester probably had its share of lots of studying, late nights, and early mornings. You worked incredibly hard, but there’s something that you need to know.

Your grades don’t define your worth. Next semester, you don’t need to spend every waking moment studying and doing homework.

Many students all over the world are going through the same struggles you are right now. All of them focused on their GPA, a number — as if that number defines more than the grades they received in their classes.

They feel as though it defines who they are as people and their worth in the world.

But I can assure you it doesn’t define who they are and it doesn’t have to define who you are, either.

There’s no rule that says you are only worthy if you obtain a certain GPA. Though it may feel that way at times, it isn’t true. You’re allowed to take a break from your school work and go out with friends, go to campus events, or just relax.

Taking time for yourself may feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you constantly overwork yourself, but I promise you, it’s possible, and it’s worth it.

You are worth it. After all, just as putting so much pressure on a number can affect how you perceive your worth, so can not take a break once in a while.

After a semester of hard work, you deserve a break. So I have a little (fun) homework assignment for you.

Embrace your next break from school. Take a few weeks to enjoy yourself. Try not to think about anything except having fun.

Maybe you can sit down with a book you’ve been meaning to read but haven’t yet had the time to start. You can watch a new movie, hang out with friends, play games, and do whatever you want. After all, this is your time to relax and unwind.

Hard-working student, know that it’s OK to take a break. No matter what your GPA looks like this semester, you tried your hardest, and you should be proud of yourself. Now take a break. You deserve it because, in reality, your grades have never and will never define who you are as a person.

Love,

A fellow hard-working student
