Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has urged the Majority Caucus not to use their numerical strength to intimidate the Minority.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, February 4, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of fostering consensus rather than resorting to oppression.

“You have the majority in Parliament, but don’t use your majority to oppress the minority,” he cautioned.

The Minority had earlier expressed concerns over intimidation tactics amid tensions that surrounded the vetting of ministerial nominees.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking on January 31, 2025, accused the Majority of suppressing dissenting views.

“We are few, but we are mighty. We will not surrender to intimidation,” he stated, recounting a recent incident where police had to escort them out of the chamber.

The Speaker’s remarks follow the suspension of four MPs, which has sparked debate.

While some support the suspension as necessary for maintaining order, others argue it undermines the democratic process.

Both caucus leaders later appealed to the Speaker to lift the suspension, citing the MPs’ remorse.

After considering their plea, the Speaker decided to lift the suspension.
