Three men, including a driver and a bodyguard, have been arrested for allegedly plotting to rob a gold dealer of his consignment worth GH¢1.3 million.
The suspects, Adams Zibo, Masawudu Yussif and Kenneth Khartey, reportedly hatched a plan to attack the dealer during a gold delivery scheduled for the following day.
However, their plans were cut short when police picked up intelligence and swiftly moved in.
Kenneth Khartey was the first to be arrested near Akuapem-Mamfe.
He was riding a motorbike and trailing a Land Cruiser that was transporting the gold. Later that same day, police apprehended Adams Zibo and Masawudu Yussif at East Legon.
They were in an unregistered blue Hyundai.
Investigations revealed that the two had arranged firearms, getaway motorbikes and a vehicle to carry out the robbery.
They were also responsible for arranging the sale of the stolen gold once the robbery was completed.
The police moved quickly to disrupt the planned crime, and all three are now in custody assisting with investigations.
A senior police officer close to the case said, “Their arrest was the result of good intelligence and swift coordination among our teams. We acted quickly to prevent what could have been a major loss”.
The case is still under investigation as police look into other possible accomplices or buyers involved in the gold sale.
