EC breaks for Christmas amidst election result controversy

The Electoral Commission has announced a break for the Christmas festivities on Wednesday, December 23, 2020.

In a statement signed by a Deputy EC Commissioner, Dr. Bossman Asare, the commission would resume on January 19, 2021.

It comes at a time when the NDC is challenging the December 7 general election results.

The NDC has alleged election fraud in some constituencies which they believe their candidates won.

Meanwhile, the Minority in parliament has demanded that the Electoral Commission boss Jean Mensa be summoned to parliament to answer questions on the outcome of the just-ended polls.

The NDC is also contesting some parliamentary seats, particularly Techiman South constituency, which they claim was wrongfully declared for the NPP.

EC boss Jean Mensa has changed the published presidential results at least three times, explaining it was to correct computation errors.

But speaking to the media, former energy minister and MP for Elembelle, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah argued the chairperson of the EC must face questions from lawmakers.

He said “this parliament before we rise must invite the electoral commission and ask the EC serious questions that are putting this democracy and our security at risk. And it’s the responsibility of this parliament to invite the electoral commission before we rise. It’s very important.”

He added, “If parliament does not do that, then who should?”
