EC registers 4.4m Ghanaians after Day 12

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has issued voter identification cards to more than a quarter of its target at the ongoing registration.

By the close of Day 12, provisional data indicated that the EC had issued approximately 4.4million Ghanaians.

This was disclosed by Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Asare at a media briefing on Monday, July 13.

“The Greater Accra Region leads with 20.9% of registered voters, Ashanti Region follows with 18.4%, and then Eastern Region is at a distant end at 9.5% and the Central Region 9.4%,” he elaborated on the breakdown. “The North East Region is at the bottom with 1.7%”.

Day 3 recorded the highest with 431, 345 registrations and the least was 321,280 for Day 6.

Applicants with the Ghana Card as proof of identity were the highest accounting for 62.34% of the total while the least were passport holders with 1.9%.

The registration process is being conducted in clusters and in five phases, with a total target of 15million.

The EC was able to register 2.23m people after Phase 1 and 2.22 people by the end of Phase 2.

An electoral area can have as many as 20 registration centres so people who could not participate at the previous centres can visit a nearby centre to complete the process in the next phase.

Meanwhile, Dr Bossman has apologised for the network challenges which resulted in an extension of the number of days in some registration centres.

The EC used the opportunity to caution political actors to desist from busing people to areas where they are not originally residents to register for the cards.
