EC to rerun Ablekuma North parliamentary election in 19 polling stations

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will conduct a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, in an effort to resolve the long-standing dispute over the 2024 parliamentary results in the Greater Accra Region.

This move comes after months of contention that have left the constituency without a Member of Parliament, following the disruption of the original collation process during the December 7 polls.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 2, the EC said the decision was made after extensive consultations with the two major political parties involved, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A meeting took place on June 12, but both parties still held opposing views.

The NDC demanded a complete rerun in all 37 polling stations, arguing that the scanned pink sheets used for collation were provided exclusively by the NPP after the original physical documents were destroyed by party supporters who stormed the collation centre.

They questioned the legitimacy of the scanned results.

The NPP, on the other hand, insisted that results from the three remaining polling stations should be collated and a winner declared, pointing out that the NDC’s agents had already endorsed the scanned pink sheets in question.

After reviewing the evidence and verifying documentation, the Commission confirmed that while all 37 scanned results were endorsed by agents from both parties, only 18 were also verified and confirmed by the presiding officers.

These 18 polling stations will not require a rerun.

“The Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officers’ verification and confirmation for 18 scanned polling station results. Agents of both parties also approved the same. A rerun will therefore not be held in those polling stations,” the EC clarified.

The EC reaffirmed its neutrality and commitment to upholding electoral integrity. It has called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure adequate security and a peaceful atmosphere during the rerun.

The outcome of the rerun is expected to finally determine the parliamentary representation for Ablekuma North, bringing closure to one of the most contentious electoral disputes from the 2024 general elections.
