Tensions continue to rise in Ablekuma North as the December 7 parliamentary election remains unresolved, with the winner yet to be declared following chaotic scenes at the Electoral Commission (EC) office.

The situation escalated when a party official from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) reportedly slammed the table of EC officials in protest. This act of aggression sparked chaos among party supporters, leading to a brief physical altercation.

The EC has yet to release an official statement on the incident, but observers have called for calm and adherence to due process to resolve the dispute.

During an interview on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Ewurabena Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, accused her opponent, NPP candidate Akua Afriyie, of attempting to manipulate the situation to retain power.

Aubynn, who claims victory in the closely contested race, criticised Afriyie’s actions during the campaign and post-election period.

“She’s been in the constituency for years, so we know her tactics and how she refuses to accept defeat,” Aubynn said.

“If you followed our campaign, you’d see how aggressive she was, even with the placement of signboards. She’s used to misbehaving. I wouldn’t take her commentary seriously,” Aubynn remarked.

The NDC candidate described the election period as one filled with hostility and underhanded tactics.

“She lost the election. She’s been in Parliament before, and people are tired of her. They want change. The voters in Ablekuma North have spoken—they voted for progress and overwhelmingly supported His Excellency John Mahama and me,” Aubynn stated.

Ewurabena Aubynn also emphasised that the results reflect a clear desire for change in Ablekuma North.

“Ablekuma North has been under the NPP for 28 years. We need development. The electorate spoke loudly for change,” she said.

Aubynn also accused Afriyie of retrieving gifts distributed to constituents after realising she was losing.

“If she truly won, why did she go around taking back the gifts she handed out to win votes? At what point did she realise she had won by 400 votes?” Aubynn questioned in an interview on Joy News.

Although Akua Afriyie agreed to appear on the same show as her political opponent, she cancelled it at the last minute.
