Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to deploy 200 new transformers in major cities to improve the country’s electricity distribution network.

The directive, which was announced during the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, comes amid growing public concern over intermittent power outages and the strain on existing infrastructure.

The Minister explained that while power generation has seen stability, the distribution network still faces significant challenges.

The move to add transformers is expected to ease pressure on the current grid and help prevent localised blackouts in high-demand areas.

“I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities in order to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit and distribute it effectively and efficiently,” Jinapor stated.

He said recent reports indicated stability in power generation and even noted that Ghana had begun exporting electricity to neighbouring countries.

However, he stressed that transmission and distribution remain top priorities for the Ministry.

“What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network,” he said.

The directive aligns with broader government efforts to enhance energy infrastructure and meet the rising demand from residential, commercial, and industrial users.

Jinapor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable power supply across the country while expanding regional energy cooperation.

This development is part of Ghana’s larger strategy to modernise its energy sector and support economic growth through improved and efficient power delivery.
