Engineer injured by stray bullets as customs officers open fire

A man was injured by gunfire on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, after customs officers shot at a vehicle trying to escape arrest around 9:00 p.m.

The vehicle, identified as a Mercedes-Benz with registration number GC 3361-14, was being pursued by customs officials in Sogakope when the officers opened fire, hitting the rear windscreen.

During the incident, Alex, an engineer working with the South Tongu District Assembly, was struck by two stray bullets. He was promptly taken to Comboni Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.

Authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the unfortunate incident.

“A pickup was chasing a car and stopped in front of us, and a few seconds later, we heard gunshots. Before we could realise it, a man who was by the roadside waiting to board a vehicle to Accra was hit by the bullets.

“We identified those who shot as the customs officials. They have, however, arrested the uncustomed vehicle they were chasing. But the victim has been rushed to the hospital,” an eyewitness narrated in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News.
