EOCO arrests Wontumi following CID questioning

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Wontumi, was taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.

Wontumi reported to the CID on Monday, May 26, 2025, as part of ongoing investigations into allegations of illegal mining activities and his alleged entry into forest reserves without the necessary approval.

He was previously granted bail and was required to return for further inquiries, which he did on Tuesday, May 27.

Just after his session at the CID, plainclothes EOCO officers approached and picked him up.

While the precise grounds for this latest arrest are still unknown, the development has drawn public attention and sparked conversations about accountability within the political class.

As of now, EOCO has not provided any official communication or charges related to his arrest.

A close aide to Wontumi, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the moment as “unexpected and tense,” adding that “he cooperated fully with both CID and EOCO officers.”

The arrest has stirred mixed reactions, with some calling for a transparent investigation while others express concern about the timing and manner of the arrest.

More details are expected as the situation unfolds.
