EPA cracks down on illegal mining along Offin River tributary

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has taken action to halt illegal mining activities along the tributaries of the Offin River at Pasoro in the Ashanti Region.

Despite an order to end all mining operations near water bodies, illegal miners continued to flout the directive.

During a recent visit, EPA officials discovered three excavators and other mining equipment at the site, although the miners were absent.

EPA Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to stopping all mining near water bodies to restore the integrity of water bodies.

She expressed disappointment over the continued environmental destruction and vowed to intensify enforcement efforts.

Illegal mining has severely impacted water bodies across the country, and the EPA has warned that individuals who defy regulations will face prosecution.

In addition to illegal mining, the tributary of the Offin River is also being degraded by unregulated sand winning, which has destroyed vast stretches of land.

Prof. Klutse indicated that the EPA will extend its regulatory measures to curb this activity as well.
